I only mildly flirt with urban legends. But I’m convinced there’s a monster of some kind lurking in the Sunset Park Pond. Several times when I’ve taken walks around it, I swear I saw a shadow the size of two men lapping the waters. Don’t believe me? Here’s a video of the beast attacking one of Sunset’s signature ducks. (Caution: profanity alert!) It lives!
At the very least, it’s something to keep an eye out for while you’re doing a little urban fishing in the pond. Here’s a quick overview:
📏 How Big Is the Pond?
According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the pond is approximately 14 surface acres, with a maximum depth of 12 feet. The perimeter of the pond is just about 2/3 of a mile, so it’s nice for a jog or stroll on a temperate day too.
🐟 What Fish Are Stocked There?
Primarily, rainbow trout and channel catfish. The Nevada Department of Wildlife is responsible for keeping the pond stocked, and according to them, “Bluegill, redear sunfish, black crappie, and largemouth bass also occur and spawn naturally.”
🪪 Do I Need A License?
Yes. For any of Nevada’s public waters, you need to have a fishing license to legally fish. Day rate for residents is $9 ($40 for a year). Licenses can be purchased at ndowlicensing.com
🗿Fun Fact
The Moai head that looms over the island in the middle of the pond is a relic from the restaurant Aku Aku, which was located in the late Stardust casino.
