Listen to our May 4 interview with Tera Anderson on the podcast.
Tera Anderson, a Las Vegas businesswoman, answers our questions below.
In April, City Cast Las Vegas invited all qualified mayoral candidates to respond to a questionnaire so that our readers could get to know them a little better. All candidates were sent the same questions, and given a 600 character-count limit. As you'll see, some questions are a little more policy-oriented and some are a little more fun!
Read the rest of the questionnaire responses here.
1. What is the single most pressing issue facing the City of Las Vegas? Why?
"It's financial stability. The city's eight-year entanglement in litigation has displaced its ability to prioritize its spending on value-add initiatives that would enrich the community and consequently has the city at risk of insolvency.
"The city has roughly $250M in judgements rendered against it and there is an additional roughly one hundred acres of land still being litigated. It is imperative that the city extracts itself from this legal battle so that it can focus tax payer resources on quality endeavors that our residents and visitors can benefit from."
2. Why is the Mayor of Las Vegas an important role for everyone living in the Valley?
"The Mayor will be the face of the globally recognized city of Las Vegas. In today's political climate it is imperative that the Mayor be someone people can be proud of and trust to be a dedicated steward of public resources and staunch supporter of merit-based decision-making.
"The city and the valley are well-served to maintain a collaborative relationship with the peripheral jurisdictions including Henderson, Clark County, North Las Vegas and other partnering adjacencies throughout the region. The Mayor's leadership style will set the tone for the next chapter of Las Vegas."
3. Buskers at the Fremont Street Experience: yea or nay?
"Nay. While Buskers are legally permitted to operate on public right of way, the buskers currently are not displaying unique and sorted artful talents, but by in large display 'acts' that would be more appropriately suited for an indoor, private entertainment venue rather than being out on public display."
4. Should the Tesla tunnels expand to the City of Las Vegas?
"Sure. It would be important to examine any financial implications to the city budget or required public funding cost share for such, but expanding the tunnels could potentially alleviate some of growing traffic constraints our community is enduring."
5. What’s your position on rent control?
"Not a fan because such policies often are ripe for more unintended consequences than producing desired outcomes. There is undoubtedly a housing affordability crises to be solved for, but there are other residential development concepts that can help achieve this before adopting rent control policies."
6. Oscar Goodman has the martini glass. What would your mayoral trademark be?
"Great question for which I don't yet have a great answer. Hhmmm... I will really have to think about that one."
7. What was Carolyn Goodman’s greatest accomplishment as mayor?
"Decorum. Carolyn Goodman has been exemplary of grace and decorum in a time when incivility has run rampant. She has held herself, her colleagues and community members to a standard becoming of the office and the business of the city."
8. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had in Las Vegas?
"That may very well be an impossible question to answer. Variety is the spice of life and we have such an extraordinary food scene in Las Vegas. The flavors, artistry and ambiance all enhance your dining experience here. And of course, it always depends on what you are in the mood for.
"The best part is that Las Vegas offers a little bit of everything from casual to fine dining and representing flavors from all over the world."
