This year, for the first time in the 21st century, the Las Vegas mayoral race won’t contain a single Goodman. After 12 years of Oscar Goodman, followed by 12 years of Carolyn Goodman in the city's top office, the 2024 primary ballot is shaking things up with 14 new candidates for mayor.
But here’s the thing: the way our valley’s jurisdictional lines are drawn, just 650,000 Southern Nevadans live within the boundaries of the City of Las Vegas. So why does this race matter if less than half of the valley can vote for the Vegas mayor? What impact does the mayor have, and what would these candidates bring to the role? To help answer these questions, we've put together a voter's guide to the 2024 Las Vegas mayoral race.
🗳️ Mayoral Mondays
Our special series on the mayoral race ran from April 22 to May 28 in both the City Cast Las Vegas podcast and the Hey Las Vegas newsletter. It begins with a conversation with longtime political reporter Steve Sebelius about this very question: Why does the mayor of Las Vegas matter?
🗓️ Candidate Interviews
Every Monday, we released in-depth conversations on the podcast with mayoral candidates. Our interviews didn't just stop with the three top-polling candidates (Shelley Berkley, Cedric Crear, and Victoria Seaman) — we invited all 14 candidates on the show, and interviewed nine of them.
🧐 But Wait — Curious About the Rest?
We also invited all 14 candidates to fill out a short questionnaire (it’s a fun one). You can find their responses below. And don’t forget: while the primary is officially held on June 11, early voting runs from May 25 to June 7!
The mayor's election is unaffiliated with any party. If a candidate earns more than 50% in primary voting, the next mayor will be determined. Otherwise, the top two candidates will face each other in a runoff on November 5.
You can find early voting locations, mail ballot drop-off locations, and more at Clark County Elections Department 2024 Primary website.
