Listen to our April 29 interview with Shelley Berkley on the podcast.
Shelley Berkley, former Representative for Nevada in Congress, answers our questions below.
In April, City Cast Las Vegas invited all qualified mayoral candidates to respond to a questionnaire so that our readers could get to know them a little better. All candidates were sent the same questions, and given a 600 character-count limit. As you'll see, some questions are a little more policy-oriented and some are a little more fun!
Read the rest of the questionnaire responses here.
1. What is the single most pressing issue facing the City of Las Vegas? Why?
"Public Safety is the single most issue that our fellow citizens talk to me about. They want to feel secure in their homes and in their neighborhoods and have the right to insist that their children are safe when they leave their home, play at public parks and attend our public schools."
2. Why is the Mayor of Las Vegas an important role for everyone living in the Valley?
"The Mayor is not only the head of the government of the city of Las Vegas but a representative of all the people who call Las Vegas home. A good Mayor should be accessible to not only our fellow citizens but to the men and women who work everyday on behalf of the city.
"In addition to the stated responsibilities for the office, the Mayor has the bully pulpit to speak on behalf of the issues that are important to all the citizens of the city. The Mayor, along with the members of the city council are responsible for the annual budget, strategic planning, and economic growth and development."
3. Buskers at the Fremont Street Experience: yea or nay?
"I would say yea within reason and regulation."
4. Should the Tesla tunnels expand to the City of Las Vegas?
"Yes. We need an alternative form of transportation to move people. This would also provide a safer way for commuters to travel within the urban core. In addition, this would generate more tourist visits to downtown Las Vegas while hopefully reducing the traffic between the strip and Las Vegas. The tunnels would provide the connectivity that our community needs."
5. What’s your position on rent control?
"I am opposed to rent control."
6. Oscar Goodman has the martini glass. What would your mayoral trademark be?
"My son Sam is a brand manager at Southern Wine and Spirits. We have actually spoken of this. I am torn between 2 possibilities. Brown Butter Bourbon because the brand headquarters is located in southern Nevada.
"The other is Lobos Tequila which would be my go to beverage if Lebron James brings an NBA team to Las Vegas. Unfortunately, no brand is actually manufactured within the city."
7. What was Carolyn Goodman’s greatest accomplishment as mayor?
"Mayor Goodman's greatest accomplishment is living with Oscar for the last 60 plus years. In addition to that, I would say building on the growth and development begun by Oscar and continuing to this day. Particularly in the downtown corridor."
8. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had in Las Vegas?
"This is a very tough question because there are so many fabulous restaurants in the city of Las Vegas. Vintner Grill, T-Bones at the Red Rock Casino, Honey Salt, Al Solito Posto, Oscar's Steakhouse.
"There are a number of great restaurants in the Arts District. My new favorite Pizza restaurant is Good Pie on Main Street. For barbeque, Roadkill. For Chinese, Chinglish. For Breakfast, EAT. Natalia for Thai food. One of the best meals I've had was at Marshe Baccus at Desert Shores."
