Mayoral Candidate Kara Jenkins on Her Hopes for Las Vegas

Listen to our May 11 interview with Kara Jenkins on the podcast.

Kara Jenkins, administrator to the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, answers our questions below.

In April, City Cast Las Vegas invited all qualified mayoral candidates to respond to a questionnaire so that our readers could get to know them a little better. All candidates were sent the same questions, and given a 600 character-count limit. As you'll see, some questions are a little more policy-oriented and some are a little more fun!

Read the rest of the questionnaire responses here.

1. What is the single most pressing issue facing the City of Las Vegas? Why?

"We need a mayor that is accessible, relatable and uses her platform for the people to tackle homelessness, housing and to create a city that is thriving. Electing a mayor that puts her people FIRST is lacking. I am running to be your Mayor for All."

2. Why is the Mayor of Las Vegas an important role for everyone living in the Valley?

"The mayor is the voice of the people and advocates a better quality of life and lifestyle for her residents. This includes a real presence in the city to address everyday problems faced by our residents like safety, housing, economic growth, more jobs and better housing for all of her residents, regardless of political party.

"The mayor seat is nonpartisan and should be that way. If you in live in Vegas, you should have access to the mayor."

3. Buskers at the Fremont Street Experience: yea or nay?

"Until 2015, Buskers were not allowed to perform because at the time, the city considered the Fremont Street Experience to be private property. An ordinance in 2015 addressed the freedom of speech issue for these artists by creating an ordinance allowing up to 38 buskers to perform by entering a daily lottery to perform in performance zones with buffers to allow pedestrian traffic.

"This seems to be an appropriate solution to allow pedestrians to enjoy the mall, while allowing artists the opportunity to perform."

4. Should the Tesla tunnels expand to the City of Las Vegas?

"I would support its expansion to our city because this will bring more business to our downtown small businesses! I support common sense ideas that will support our people!"

5. What’s your position on rent control?

"Rent control is an issue being addressed by the Nevada Legislature and I support reasonable rent caps for certain income levels as well as caps on excessive application fees so our residents can get into affordable housing."

6. Oscar Goodman has the martini glass. What would your mayoral trademark be?

"A Black Showgirl with OPEN ARMS - Mayor for ALL"

7. What was Carolyn Goodman’s greatest accomplishment as mayor?

"The Goodmans are legends, serving a combined 24 years in office. Mayor Goodman reflected kindness in her tenure."

8. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had in Las Vegas?

"The BEST? Wow! We are in the foodie capitol of the world! Can't pick, but Esther's Kitchen on Main St. has fresh pasta and spaghetti that makes my heart sing!"
