Deb Peck, a Las Vegas insurance company agent, answers our questions below.
In April, City Cast Las Vegas invited all qualified mayoral candidates to respond to a questionnaire so that our readers could get to know them a little better. All candidates were sent the same questions, and given a 600 character-count limit. As you'll see, some questions are a little more policy-oriented and some are a little more fun!
Read the rest of the questionnaire responses here.
1. What is the single most pressing issue facing the City of Las Vegas? Why?
"Beside water scarcity- The homelessness and mental illness throughout our city is effecting every aspect of our lives. It affects safety, security, health, business, veterans, drug abuse, crime, medical costs, in a trickle down effect.
"I want a world class mental health facility here to deal with this with a transitional department to help people back to a productive life. I would work with federal and state officials to address water allotment from the Co. River. Ca wastes so much of the water that we could get."
2. Why is the Mayor of Las Vegas an important role for everyone living in the Valley?
"Strong Leadership sets the tone and direction of the administration. The Mayor provides the vision for the city's future. As a city's spokesperson the mayor can advocate for the city interests on the regional, state and national level.
"Community engagement shows how the Mayor can care about the tax payer. The Mayor is vital for the effective governance and prosperity of the city. Showgirls and martinis are not us!"
3. Buskers at the Fremont Street Experience: yea or nay?
"Big Nay. I want to make Fremont street customer friendly again. When managed properly buskers in other urban areas can add vibrancy to public places but I feel that they detract and have a negative interaction with the visitors walking Las Vegas streets. Each of the casinos attract visitors in their own right with their own music and entertainment and lights."
4. Should the Tesla tunnels expand to the City of Las Vegas?
"Depends on the cost ,feasibility, equity and safety. Careful evaluation of the potential benefits, costs, and challenges, as well as input from the community is needed.
"It's not just the cost of construction but also the maintenance that needs consideration. Is our environment and infrastructure going to be safe while they tunnel? How can we ensure that the system is accessible and affordable for all residents, not just the tourists? My priority is the tax payer, the senior, the veterans and the Las Vegas citizen."
5. What’s your position on rent control?
"NO rent control. Less government in our lives is best. Rent control reduces the supply of rental units. It decreases the quality of housing as landlords may have less incentive to maintain/upgrade their properties. Developers might be less motivated to build new units if they know rent will be controlled while building supplies are not.
"Though rent control benefits current tenants, new renters might face higher prices due to reduced availability of controlled units."
6. Oscar Goodman has the martini glass. What would your mayoral trademark be?
"As a native Las Vegan I was always embarrassed by that image of martinis and show girls. It was so very outdated and nonapplicable to all of us born and raised here. I would have a picture of happy people, the tax payer, the business owner, in our homes. I would show our community."
7. What was Carolyn Goodman’s greatest accomplishment as mayor?
"Economic development of downtown Las Vegas. Renovation of older properties and enhancement of cultural and entertainment amenities. She helped diversify the city economy beyond gaming and tourism."
8. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had in Las Vegas?
"Being born here throughout the years many restaurants have served me heavenly meals that are now closed but within the last year I would say Delilahs at Wynn. Otherwise my own cooking."
