Listen to our May 6 interview with Cedric Crear on the podcast.
Cedric Crear, a Las Vegas councilman, answers our questions below.
In April, City Cast Las Vegas invited all qualified mayoral candidates to respond to a questionnaire so that our readers could get to know them a little better. All candidates were sent the same questions, and given a 600 character-count limit. As you'll see, some questions are a little more policy-oriented and some are a little more fun!
Read the rest of the questionnaire responses here.
1. What is the single most pressing issue facing the City of Las Vegas? Why?
"Public safety is the single most pressing issue for the City of Las Vegas. For our residents’ quality of life, and for our city to continue to thrive as a global destination and the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas needs to be safe."
2. Why is the Mayor of Las Vegas an important role for everyone living in the Valley?
"The Mayor of Las Vegas acts as the ambassador for Las Vegas on the global stage. The residents of the Las Vegas Valley need a mayor that recognizes this and is willing to put in the work to keep our City a safe and desirable destination to visit while maintaining it as a comfortable environment to live and raise a family."
3. Buskers at the Fremont Street Experience: yea or nay?
"Yes. Buskers are part of the Las Vegas and Fremont Street Experience and we’ve made great strides in mitigating their impact under the canopy. So long as the street performers register with the City and perform in accordance with the city ordinance, they should be free to continue performing."
4. Should the Tesla tunnels expand to the City of Las Vegas?
"Yes, I support the expansion of the Tesla tunnels and all forms of public transportation in the City of Las Vegas.
"The Tesla tunnels serve as a unique experience for tourists and a practical solution to safely move residents and tourists alike throughout the City while also providing employment opportunities for many of our residents."
5. What’s your position on rent control?
"I am a firm believer that the market should dictate rent levels and government shouldn’t artificially cap rents. Having said that, I’m a firm proponent of protections under the law for tenants. Moreover, I have been a consistent supporter of tough penalties for landlords who are bad actors."
6. Oscar Goodman has the martini glass. What would your mayoral trademark be?
"The options I’m considering include a stove-pipe hat, a Sherlock Holmes style pipe and three-piece suit with pocket watch."
7. What was Carolyn Goodman’s greatest accomplishment as mayor?
"Mayor Carolyn Goodman’s greatest accomplishment has to be her creation of the Department Youth Development & Social Initiatives, providing before and after-school programs and wraparound partnerships with community organizations. The program is increasing attendance and graduation rates while introducing career and educational pathways to success."
8. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had in Las Vegas?
"The best meal I’ve ever had in Las Vegas is my wife Keiba’s Seafood Gumbo. While I respect all the celebrity chefs and Beard Award winners serving delectables all over town, none of them can come close to my better half."
