The Growing Pains of a Neighborhood Food Hall

The Sundry opened last summer as an ambitious food hall, with multiple concepts operating from a single kitchen and two additional sit-down restaurants. Since then, The Sundry remains the anchor tenant of UnCommons but has changed things up to benefit the bottom line.

The System Wasn’t Working

The original idea seemed easy enough. You’d sit down, scan a QR code, and order whatever you’d like. However, the digital menu wasn’t organized well and led to constant scrolling. People just didn’t like it. The Sundry now has in-person servers with physical menus — although you can still order digitally if you prefer.

The Menu is Smaller

You can’t be all things to all people. The Sundry has dramatically cut at least 30 dishes from its menu.

It’s All One Concept Now

Mizunara (Japanese) and B.S. Taqueria (Mexican) are no longer separate restaurants. They’ve been absorbed into the food hall with their dining rooms now open to general seating. The biggest casualty: B.S. Taqueria had an amazing Mexican spirits bar that was truly something special. Some of it is still around, but much of the selection is being phased out.

Bar Oysterette Has Essentially Disappeared

I miss this the most. The original Bar Oysterette had a full menu with engaging counter service, pours of natural wines on standby, and sourcing details on an excellent catch of oysters from around the country. It was an interactive experience overlooking the kitchen with oysters shucked on-the-spot. Now, it feels sterile, like you’re eavesdropping on the kitchen crew.

The Good News: The Food is Still Pretty Great

There’s just less of it. For the most part, the highlights on the regular menu are the same as they were from the start, including the Chicken Tikka Masala (a full meal with rice and naan bread) from Dhaba Ji and the grilled salmon from Kavos with chopped salad on the side.

New Concepts Were Introduced

After a long delay, SoulBelly BBQ is finally part of The Sundry. You can smell the meats from the parking garage, smoked slow and low on Texas oak. The delicious brisket is currently available in an off-menu taco special, featuring B.S Taqueria’s wonderful hand-pressed masa tortillas. Four Corners, meanwhile, has four options for “Detroit-style” square pizzas.

Happy Hour Remains the Best Time to Visit

You get great deals on sliders, chicken tenders, and oysters (although without the missed details on sourcing). A $9 “bartender’s choice” cocktail turned out to be a Golden Negroni on a recent visit. A nice surprise — and not bad at all. I’d love to see more of that ambitious spirit come back to The Sundry.
