Listen to our May 5 interview with Kola Akingbade on the podcast.
Kola Akingbade, a Las Vegas real estate agent, answers our questions below.
In April, City Cast Las Vegas invited all qualified mayoral candidates to respond to a questionnaire so that our readers could get to know them a little better. All candidates were sent the same questions, and given a 600 character-count limit. As you'll see, some questions are a little more policy-oriented and some are a little more fun!
Read the rest of the questionnaire responses here.
1. What is the single most pressing issue facing the City of Las Vegas? Why?
"Yearly, Las Vegas Experiences an Offseason(June-August, and November-February). Las Vegas economy has become almost seasonal and unpredictable. Whenever inflation strikes, during and after any world financial or economical meltdown(2007) during and after a pandemic, Las Vegas always experiences more suffering than any other city in the nation.
"Las Vegas is always the last city to recover after a catastrophe. People are laid off, and therefore struggle to meet their financial obligations. Usually, this affects our middle and lower class. This is unacceptable. We must OFFSET the OFFSEASON."
2. Why is the Mayor of Las Vegas an important role for everyone living in the Valley?
"The Mayor’s role is important for everyone living in the Valley because not only does he/she recommend policy to the City Council. These policies, if accepted will affect us all in one way or another, and advance the city in a positive direction. The Mayor is responsible for inspiring, encouraging, educating, and instilling confidence in everyone living in the Valley."
3. Buskers at the Fremont Street Experience: yea or nay?
"Yea."
4. Should the Tesla tunnels expand to the City of Las Vegas?
"While the technology is welcoming and intriguing, the Valley will eventually need underground tunneling for mass transportation. So NO."
5. What’s your position on rent control?
"We must have rent control because it protects long-term renters; it insures that new renters are not priced out of the rental market. It guarantees that all citizens will have access to rentals in every part of the Valley. At the same time, we cannot have a situation where landlords cannot pay their mortgage."
6. Oscar Goodman has the martini glass. What would your mayoral trademark be?
"Eggs in a basket."
7. What was Carolyn Goodman’s greatest accomplishment as mayor?
"She strengthened Las Vegas position as the Entertainment Capital of the World by bringing in the Knights, the WNBA, the Raiders, and The Super Bowl."
8. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had in Las Vegas?
"Extra succulent steak, mashed potatoes with mushrooms and green beans."
