🚧 It’s Construction Season in Las Vegas

We’re getting closer to this. (Las Vegas Grand Prix)

It’s that time of year again — when we get pumpkin spice lattes, early Halloween decorations, and Formula 1 construction crews, fully equipped to turn our lives upside down on and around the Strip.

  • Las Vegas Blvd. is now down to one southbound lane during the annual ritual of removing trees and blocking the sidewalk in front of the Bellagio fountains to install Bellagio Fountain Club seating for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is still more than two months away. [KVVU]
  • Additional track work continues on Harmon and Koval this week. Text F1LV to 31996 if you'd like regular updates. [Las Vegas Grand Prix]
  • The LVCVA and the Boring Company anticipate having new Vegas Loop stations open on Paradise Road well before the race. This helps F1 fans get closer to the track near Virgin Hotels without having to worry about parking. The stations connect two additional miles of tunnel routes, allowing Las Vegas to either have more efficient transportation — or hide our traffic jams underground. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
  • F1 and other sports events helped boost live entertainment tax revenues by nearly 400% since 2019. About 13% of tourists viewed a sporting event in Las Vegas in 2025. [KLAS]
  • But overall, tourism is down and the LVCVA is blaming at least some of that on an ever-expanding K-shaped economy that further separates the haves from the have-nots. [Nevada Current]
  • City Cast Las Vegas looks at the effects of K-shaped economics on tourism, how evictions are carried out, and our latest local fixations in today’s news roundup. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

🛣️ Where to next? (Waymo)

🤔 Boulder Junction, What’s Your Function?

After an extensive testing period, Waymo is now actively serving the general public in Las Vegas within a 24-square-mile area that includes the Strip and “Boulder Junction” — a neighborhood name that nobody uses outside Zillow listings. It apparently exists west of Interstate 15. Vegas customers are among the first to ride the Ojai, an upgraded vehicle for the autonomous taxi service with larger screens and greater leg room. ☢️ Nevada Explores the Nuclear Option

Nuclear reactors small enough to fit on the bed of an 18-wheeler are being tested outside Vegas at the Nevada National Security Site, a place that has a long history of testing nuclear power of the dangerous kind. The devices could produce power for up to eight years without interruption, but don’t melt down over safety concerns — at least not yet. The current testing only determines if a reactor is capable of sustaining a controlled nuclear chain reaction and doesn’t actually ignite one. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

💰 CCSD Seeks Help in Budget Battle

The Clark County School District is pushing for a new Nevada law in next year’s legislative session to change how budgets are drafted. Budgets are based on current enrollment, which is down due in part to declining birth rates, a trend that CCSD says is especially noticeable in Kindergarten and first grade classes. [KTNV]

🌎 The Sphere’s Newest Headliner: Oprah

Oprah Winfrey is coming to the Sphere with AHA — which may or may not be a reference to the ticket prices. The somewhat mysterious production has four dates booked in April with musical guests, poetry, and in the words of Oprah herself, an immersive “symphony for all of your senses." [CBS News]
