I know, I know. You’re just itching for a good excuse to get back inside a DMV. Well, here you go. After years of delays, the deadline for REAL ID finally arrives on May 7, 2025.

🪪 What is REAL ID?

Think of REAL ID as a “deluxe” version of your regular driver’s license or state-issued identification card. It requires a more scrutinized proof of identity and includes a gold star and barcode that are difficult to counterfeit.

🤔 How Do I Know If I Need One?

You may already have a REAL ID and not realize it. (The DMV has been steering everyone towards it for years now.) Look at your Nevada driver's license or ID. If there’s a gold star in the upper right-hand corner, you’re all set.

👀 How Do I Get One?

Sorry, you have to apply for a REAL ID in person. Book an appointment (or just wait in line if you don’t value time) at your nearest DMV and check the list for approved items to confirm your identity, social security number, and Nevada residency. Hard rule: you must bring original documents.

🛫 Why Is a REAL ID Important?

After May 7, a REAL ID will continue to be accepted at the airport for boarding domestic flights, while a standard-issue driver’s license or ID card won’t. The same applies for clearing security at certain federal buildings and military facilities.

😡 What If I Don’t Want One

You can still use a passport instead. Your passport’s up to date, right?

⏳ What If I Need More Time?

Get over it. The requirements date back to 2005 when Congress passed an act to establish REAL ID cards in response to the 9/11 terror attacks. The original deadline was actually in 2008 and has been extended multiple times over the years for states to comply — including Nevada, which began issuing REAL ID cards in 2014 — and to accommodate social distancing during the pandemic.

🤨 Is This a Good Thing?

Depends on who you ask. The concept has faced criticism by civil rights, privacy advocates, and those worried it opens the door to a “national identification card” down the line. President Obama opposed the idea and his administration even offered alternatives that went nowhere. Happy about it or not, REAL ID is here to stay. So get with the program 🫡
