Your Guide to January in Las Vegas

00:00:00

Now that we’ve shaken off our long holiday brumation, let’s look ahead at what’s worth putting on your To Do list this month — a topic our podcast co-host Sarah Lohman recently discussed with TheList.Vegas publisher Andrew Kiraly.

🥾 🛼 Get Moving

Sloan Canyon: You resolved to get in better shape, and January’s already more than one-tenth over — time to start resolutin’. This hiking area is Kiraly’s suggestion. “I love it because it's basically under-visited,” he says. It’s a less congested experience, whether you’re on the McCullough Hills side, “a super chill, rolling hike with great views of the valley,” or, as Sarah prefers, the petroglyph hike.

Skate Rock City Anniversary: Generations of locals remember this as the legendary Crystal Palace, now marking three years under the ownership of boxer Floyd Mayweather. “They are turning it into a weekend of themed parties and celebrity appearances,” Kiraly says. “I'm really rooting for Skate Rock City because it's a glimmer of positivity on Boulder Highway.” (Jan. 26-28, Boulder Highway)

👪 Family Affairs

“Pipeline”: In this staged reading by A Public Fit, an inner-city teacher fights to keep her brilliant, troubled son out of the school-to-prison pipeline. (Jan. 16-27 at Clark County Library.)

“Operation Family Secrets”: A retired FBI agent and a former mobster talk about “the case that brought down the Chicago Outfit.” (Jan. 18, Mob Museum)

🩰 Keeping It Classy

The Listezo Quartet: “They do these candlelight concerts,” Kiraly says. “They just light up hundreds of LED candles and bust out with a tribute.” This time it’s to composer Hans Zimmer, known for his evocative film scores. (Jan. 18, The Industrial Event Space)

“Balanchine & Robbins”: Two great tastes — the virtuosity of George Balanchine, the brio of Jerome Robbins — in one Nevada Ballet Theatre show. (Jan. 27-28, The Smith Center)

Marilu Henner: The noted actress shifts to chanteuse mode for this one-woman show. (Jan. 20, The Smith Center)

🧠 Engage Your Brain

TEDxUNLV: The famous idea-sharing program comes to UNLV, and as much as one properly detests the term “thought leader,” there are sure to be some interesting concepts floated. (Jan. 27, UNLV)

“The Paradigm of Poison” Reception: Excellent local sculptor Ross Takahashi curates a group show on the theme of toxins — chemical, social, political, metaphorical. (Jan. 27, New Orleans Square)
