Our Mayoral Mondays series is back as Las Vegas voters determine the next person to hold the city’s top job. We’ve already heard from Shelley Berkley, Cedric Crear, Tera Anderson, Kola Akingbade, Kara Jenkins and Lynn Baird. Now, Victoria Seaman has her turn. Like Crear, she’s a City Council member, but says she’s “taken it a step further” and previews her interview with some thoughts on transportation.
What should the future look like for the City of Las Vegas in regards to traffic and transportation?
“I hear people's concerns. Work has to be done, but it can be done more strategically, where we don't have cones when people are not working, for example. That would require working with infrastructure at the city level …
“We also have a program for Zero Fatalities that we got a federal grant for. There's been a big increase in fatalities in automobile accidents and it’s something we're really concerned about at this point … Accountability is just not there. People run through red lights, there are so many DUIs … We need more accountability for drivers causing fatalities.”
What's the status of light rail as a City of Las Vegas project?
“We should do more than just talk about it. It's important for our city. We need to take a bigger step at making sure we have the public transportation that we need. I also love what they're doing with the Boring Company (Vegas Loop) tunnels. I hope they'll expand the tunnels. I think that will help a lot. Light rail and anything we can do to increase public transportation is my number-one priority.”
As mayor, how would you hold the Boring Company accountable for safety and environmental concerns?
“We will definitely hold them accountable. I think they're doing a phenomenal job right now and I look forward to them moving forward to the city.”
